Adult and Higher Education, Education Specialist (EdS)

Program Info
The Education Specialist program is a 30-hour, post-master's degree program designed for those looking to enhance education beyond the (adult and/or higher education) master's degree, but not to the extent of a doctoral program. The Ed.S, in adult and higher education is an extremely flexible program, allowing students to practically tailor a program suited their individual needs or aspirations. Once admitted, students complete a program plan with the aid and approval of their advisors before taking courses. the program features a substantial cognate and an applied project designed to further expertise in a given area.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional body for the accreditation of degree granting higher education institutions in the Southern states.

Education Specialist in Adult and Higher Education

 Admission Requirements:
  1. General admission to graduate study.
  2. A master's degree in adult and/or higher education from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Two years of relevant professional experience and one year of full-time teaching experience are recommended.
  4. Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic references.
  5. Minimum composite GRE score of 283 on the verbal and quantitative sections or a 31 raw score (381-386 scaled score) on the Miller Analogies Test.
  6.  For international students, a TOEFL score of 525 (197 computer-based) or higher, or a score of 74 or higher on the English Language Instruction Test of the University of Michigan.
Program Requirements:
  1. Satisfy the general degree requirements.
  2. Must be Unconditionally Admitted. A student will not be allowed to register for courses without being unconditionally admitted.
  3.  A graduate GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4-point scale. Any student who receives grades of “C” in more than two graduate courses will be immediately dropped from the program. Any student receiving a “D,” “E” or “U” in more than one course will be immediately dropped from the program. A student whose GPA falls below 3.5 will be placed on one semester of academic probation and must raise GPA to a 3.5 minimum in order to remain in the Ed.S. program. 
  4.  Complete at least 30 hours of course work beyond the Master’s degree in accord with the enumerated Adult and Higher Education Ed.S. requirements. Content in courses taken for the master’s degree may not be duplicated in subsequent courses taken to complete the Ed.S.
  5.  Students who have taken cognate hours for their master’s degrees can continue the same cognates for the Ed.S. A maximum of nine (9) cognate hours will be recognized from the qualifying master’s degree toward the 18-hour Ed.S. cognate. Students with no master’s cognate hours must complete the full 18-hour cognate. 
  6. Students with recognized master’s cognate hours must take additional electives to complete the 30-hour course requirement.
  7. Successful completion of comprehensive written and/or oral examinations.
  8. Successful completion of the Applied Project within 2 years of its initiation.
