Requirements and Conditions for Graduation

Associate Degree Requirements

All associate degrees (Associate of Arts and Associate of Applied Science) require you to: 

  • Complete the required number of credits for the degree (e.g. 60 credits needed for 2010 catalog and later).
  • Pass all required courses for the particular degree.
  • Enroll and earn no fewer than 16 credits at MSU.
  • Maintain a 2.0 cumulative and institution grade point average.
 

Bachelor Degree Requirements

All bachelor degrees (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Social Work, and Bachelor of University Studies) require you to:
  • Complete the required number of credits for the degree.
  • Pass all required courses for the particular degree.
  • Enroll and earn no fewer than 32 credits at MSU.
  • Maintain a 2.0 cumulative and institutional grade point average.

Some programs of study may have additional program and/or grade point average requirements based upon accreditation standards and/or the catalog year that you are in. Students must review the requirements of the specific degree program to determine if there are additional requirements. 
 

Graduation Application Deadline

All students graduating with a diploma must apply by October 15 for fall and winter sessions and March 15 for spring and summer sessions. 

  • A $60 graduation fee must be paid by the specified date for each term for undergraduates. The fee is $80 for graduate students. Fees paid after these dates increase to $70 and $90. The fee is $150 for doctoral degree candidates. This fee must be paid in order for a student to apply for graduation and is non-refundable. The fee is valid for five years after application. After five years have expired, students are required to re-apply and pay the graduation fee again.
  • Fall, winter, spring and summer candidates participating in commencement will receive a blank diploma cover during the commencement ceremony.
  • Diplomas will be available approximately four to six weeks after the end of the term and may be picked up in the Registrar's Office or mailed to the address provided on your degree application. You will be notified via your MSU email address when your diploma is ready.
