Student Spotlight

Lin-hsiu Huang was selected as one of five commissioned artists to work for the non-profit organization, Give Her Life, where she created a piece of artwork raising awareness for the issue of gendercide. She presented her work among the other artists in North Hollywood, California in December of 2015. Additionally, her undergraduate research fellowship that she started her first semester of college involves her working as a producer for an on-campus live TV show, Hear Me Roar, where she advocates important issues that women and minorities face. As a first-year student, she has presented in several conferences across the state including the Kentucky Honors Roundtable in Louisville, Poster at the Capitol in Frankfort, the Celebration of Student Scholarship and “Moving to the Front” poster presentations at MSU. Using art as a form to raise awareness and self-expression, Lin hopes to also continue her freelance business, LINear Design, throughout the next 3 years at MSU. As a freelance artist, she has completed over 200 products within 6 months. Mainly working with acrylics on CDs, she has been featured on MSU’s Trail Blazer, Art This, and Hear Me Roar.

Henry Quillen interned recently for the Canadian Parliament. During his internship he attended meetings of the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and International Development. He gained experience in preparing press releases and community articles for publication. Henry also researched and reported on issues pertaining to Ukraine foreign affairs, far-right actors, and religion, as well as the history and benefits of Canada - Turks & Caicos Islands relations; and Senate reform.
Andrew Perrin will be representing the College of Education at the Idea Festival in Louisville, September 29-October 2, 2015.  His poster presentation, “Technology in Kentucky Social Studies Classrooms,” won the Certificate of Exceptional Merit at the Celebration of Student Scholarship in April 2015.
Rachel Brown was one of thirty-nine out of over 1,400 students from across the United States to be selected for the University of Pennsylvania’s 2015 Summer Undergraduate Internship Program through Penn’s Biomedical Graduate Studies. She is spending ten weeks living and conducting research at Penn, and will present her work at The Leadership Alliance National Symposium in Connecticut. Rachel credits this amazing opportunity to her fantastic MSU professors, curriculum, and rewarding research experiences, especially those encouraged by the Honors Program.
Kathryn Jackson served as the 2014-2015 State President for the Kentucky Collegiate National Association for Music Education. She was responsible for presiding over clinics at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Winter Conference in February. She was also awarded, by music faculty nomination and vote, the Theodore Presser Undergraduate Scholarship Award – which is given to an outstanding music major at, or after the end of his or her junior year. The Presser Scholar is selected by the music faculty with the choice of the recipient guided solely by the consideration of excellence and merit. She was also awarded, by music faculty nomination and vote, the Glenn and Helen F. Fulbright Music Education Award – which is an award presented to the outstanding Jr. or Sr. Student in music education who has demonstrated ability and promise as a future music educator. The music education faculty selects the winner of this award. Jackson also received the Certificate of Exceptional Merit from the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences for her oral fellowship presentation at the Celebration of Student Scholarship in April 2015. She was a field commander of the 2014 Morehead State University Marching Band. Kathryn participated in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Band in 2015 at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Winter Conference. She spent a portion of her 2015 summer as a volunteer teacher of music in Auckland, New Zealand.
