AHRC Fellowship Program

The MSU/Appalachian Health & Research Center (AHRC) Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program is specifically designed to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to work as junior colleagues with faculty scholars/mentors from MSU and AHRC partners, St. Claire HealthCare and the University of Kentucky. Participants in the program work on basic and applied research that addresses health issues faced by residents of Appalachian Kentucky and beyond.

The program is open to all full-time undergraduate students who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • ACT Composite of 24 or higher.
  • Overall cumulative and in-major GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Other evidence of research/scholarship potential.

Faculty mentors must provide evidence of an active research/creative productions program (e.g., publications, grants, exhibitions, performances, etc.).  Students may work up to 15 hours per week during the academic year. Students in the program will be paid $7.50 to $9 per hour, based on how long they remain in the program. Fellowships are renewable for up to four years with satisfactory progress.

Consistent with national data, MSU undergraduate fellows noted in a recent survey that major strengths of the program included:

  • Improvement of knowledge of the discipline and updating of existing knowledge
  • Enhancement of life-long learning skills
  • Prepares students for the type of work they will be involved with in graduate school
  • Increases self-confidence and academic recognition.

Similarly, faculty mentors surveyed agreed with the student responses and also indicated that undergraduate research enhances faculty-student social and academic interactions, creates an atmosphere of student as colleague and demonstrates University support for academic scholarship.
  • Apply for the MSU/AHRC Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) Program
