Languages

Morehead State offers majors in Spanish and Spanish with teacher certification (P-12), and minors in Spanish and French. Courses in German and Latin are also available online through instructors from Kentucky Educational Television.

Whichever program you choose to study, MSU provides you with rigorous training in language and culture. You will have opportunities to engage in your chosen culture and language of study through history, literature and film both on campus and in the community. Language programs are supplemented by several exciting overseas study opportunities including studies in France, Spain, Germany, China and more. You may choose to study overseas for as little as two weeks, a month, a full semester, or even a year. Many of our students qualify for financial aid while away that can be used to pay for tuition and expenses abroad.

Students will participate in activities and opportunities that provide real-world, hands-on experience, including:

  • Tutoring in local schools
  • Service learning courses or activities using Spanish
  • Translation projects in a variety of for-profit and non-profit settings
  • Internships using knowledge of a second language.

You may choose to study the following areas:

Minors in Spanish and French are also available.

MSU also offers online coursework in German and Latin.

Program Requirements

To be accepted into one of our language programs, you must meet MSU's admission requirements.

We want students to progress as rapidly as possible in their chosen language. It is strongly recommended that students enrolling at MSU take a placement examination in Spanish or French if they have studied the language previously and intend to continue their studies at MSU. The placement test is available at any time online and takes no more than 30 minutes to complete. The score is sent automatically to the student immediately after taking the test and should be brought to the department chair. We will recommend placement on the basis of the score.

For questions, contact the department chair, Dr. Keith Terry at 606-783-2134 or via email at ke.terry@moreheadstate.edu.

Note: Those who begin in a more advanced class will have the opportunity to earn credit by examination for the classes they do not need to take. Please consult the department for details.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of our programs are prepared to enter careers in interpretation and translation. You will find employment opportunities in industries where knowledge of a second language is beneficial, including business and commerce,  government work, teaching, tourism, social services and more.

MSU's Career Services offers career planning, interview and resume preparation assistance, internship placement, and services to help you find a job after you graduate.
