Art History Minor

The minor in art history is a 21-credit hour program designed to strengthen the non-art major's knowledge of visual arts and architecture across time, from regional to global perspectives. You will have broad exposure to diverse arts through three 200-level core classes, and the opportunity to study periods and cultures of your choice in greater depth through two 300 or above level courses. You will also receive a firm grounding in the methods of the discipline and develop your skills in writing about art. An introduction to two-dimensional traditional and digital media, as well as color theory, is provided through the core courses of Art 100 (2D Design and Color Foundation) and Art 109 (Digital Foundations).

Art history minors are frequent participants in department-sponsored field trips to world-class museums, archaeological sites, cultural centers, and special events. Some have also served as Undergraduate Research Fellows, working on projects with art history faculty or have participated in collaborative community outreach initiatives. A number have pursued their studies abroad, particularly with the Kentucky Institute for International Studies consortium. The minor has been popular with students studying history, world languages and literature, theater, creative writing and communications, and provides an important foundation for those planning careers in international relations, as museum curators or educators, or in arts administration. For some students, the minor affords an opportunity to explore the discipline before deciding on further graduate studies. For others, it is a very personal pursuit born of an interest in art.
