Study in the Master of Music - Concentration in Performance is centered around a specialization in voice, brasswinds, woodwinds, percussion, orchestral strings, keyboard instruments, guitar,  jazz, or instrumental and choral conducting.

The Master of Music - Concentration in Music Education option provides a curriculum that offers both accessibility and flexibility. Several of the courses for this degree are offered online. The flexible curriculum allows for a significant amount of study in voice, brasswinds, woodwinds, percussion, orchestral strings, keyboard instruments, guitar, Kodály, jazz, or instrumental and choral conducting with additional opportunities to study music history and literature and music education. This program is designed for the practicing music educator. With the unique combination of online courses and face-to-face summer courses, this degree can easily be completed in three years without having to take a leave from the students' teaching duties.

the Kodály institute of kentucky

Kodály levels I, II and III programs of music study can be taken for graduate work toward a master’s program or for professional development. The programs address both national and state music standards, including Kentucky Content Standards.

Kodály involves an integration of ideas, techniques and approaches to develop music training programs. It is a hands-on, experience-based approach to teaching music and recognized as the most comprehensive and advanced training for music professionals.

Program Requirements

General admission to graduate study at Morehead State University. Admission to graduate study is granted to students who meet the academic requirements and who hold a baccalaureate degree from Morehead State University or some other accredited institution of higher education, and to certain qualified Morehead State University seniors.

  1. Completion of a bachelor's degree in music from an accredited institution or its equivalent with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all undergraduate music courses above the freshman level.
  2. General admission to graduate study.
  3. Completion of the Graduate Music Entrance Examination in music history/literature and music theory (analysis). The music entrance examination must be completed prior to the first semester of enrollment and is administered at the start of the fall, spring and summer I semesters by the coordinator of graduate studies in music.
  4. Successful completion of an audition for the appropriate music faculty is required for admission to the performance concentration. When a live audition is not possible, an audition via Skype or other live video conferencing medium will be arranged.
  5. Prior to enrollment in graduate-level music education courses, graduate students pursuing the Master of Music with emphasis in music education must hold an earned bachelor's degree in music education from an accredited institution or enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate Integrated Music P-12 Initial Certification Program and complete the education and music education course requirements.
