Bio

"The students I have encountered at Morehead State are truly a rare breed.  They are genuinely excited about their education and future. Every day presents new avenues of discovery, and students are impatiently waiting to learn more at every turn."

Dedicated to a versatile musical approach, Matthew Geiger hopes to continue to champion both new and canonic works through continued study, performance, teaching, and research.  His experience includes both the study and performance of orchestral percussion, solo and chamber repertoire, timpani, drum set, and world music.  His recent performances have focused on solo vibraphone, both in the jazz idiom as well as contemporary twentieth-century repertoire.  Recently, he was named the winner of the 2013 International Solo Vibraphone Competition by the Percussive Arts Society.

Matthew embraces a comprehensive approach to percussion and strives to achieve that in various groups, including regularly performing with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, marching with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, commissioning and premiering with the Listen! Percussion group in Ann Arbor as well as Sound Vision: Contemporary Music Ensemble in Lexington. Summer Festival study has included June in Buffalo Performance Institute, the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and the Nief-Norf Summer Festival. He has recorded for the Naxos and Mark Records label, including performing as principal percussionist and timpanist on the Grammy nominated recording of Darius Milhaud's "L'Orestie,".

Beyond the performance world, Matthew enjoys a life of educating students of all levels.  He has taught private lessons as well as assisted as a percussion instructor in high schools across the Midwest.  Currently, Matthew is an adjunct professor at Morehead State University, teaching assistant at the University of Kentucky, assistant director of the Lafayette high school marching percussion, and a front ensemble instructor with The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps based out of Arizona.

Matthew is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Percussion Performance at the University of Kentucky.  He received his Master's degree in percussion performance at the University of Michigan, where he regularly performed with the Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Band, Percussion Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble, and Latin Jazz Ensemble.  Before coming to Michigan, he received his Bachelor's degree in Music Performance at the University of Kentucky. In 2011 and 2014, Matthew was asked to perform with the University of Kentucky Percussion Ensemble at the PASIC showcase concert. Also at the University of Kentucky, he performed with several ensembles including the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Steel Band. His principal teachers have included James B. Campbell, Joseph Gramley, and Jonathan Ovalle.
