Early Childhood Education

The Bachelor of Arts Area in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education at MSU leads to certification for teachers working with young children from birth through kindergarten. Courses focus on understanding child development and effective intervention with young children, as well as how to build relationships and collaborate with families and community agencies.

You will learn how to design early childhood programs that follow state child care regulations and will examine legislation and public policy regarding children and their families.

Program Requirements

Students must meet MSU's general admission requirements.

In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission to the university, students seeking teacher certification must apply for and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). You may view the TEP handbook here. Additionally, to enroll in the clinical practice and meet state certification requirements, students must maintain a GPA of 2.75 overall (in all course work), as well as in professional education courses, with no grade lower than a "C" in professional education courses.

Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) candidates will be required to take the IECE PRAXIS exam. A passing score will be required by EPSB for IECE teacher certification.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program are prepared for education careers in public and private schools for young children, birth through kindergarten.

MSU's Career Services offers career planning, interview and resume preparation assistance, internship placement, and services to help you find a job after you graduate.
