Master of Arts in Adult and Higher Education

This program is designed to develop the capacity of individuals to plan, organize, and carry through a variety of education and service programs to meet adult learners' needs in postsecondary and adult continuing education institutions. This program is not approved for rank change for public school teachers.   

Areas of Specialization

Our 30-hour master's includes a nine-hour area of specialization that can be tailored to meet your interests and aspirations. Although you are free to develop your own areas of specialization (with advisor approval), the following areas of specialization have been pre-approved by our program and the offering departments and schools:

Business Training and Development, School of Business Administration

Choose three of the following courses:

  • MNGT 600 Survey of Management and Organizational Behavior 
  • MNGT 662 Human Resource Development 
  • MNGT 665 Organizational Behavior MNGT 661 Human Resource Topics 


Community College, Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education

  • EDAH 660 Survey of Community College 
  • EDAH 661 The Community College Student 
  • EDAH 662 Seminar in Community College 

Counseling, Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education

Three of the following courses: 
  • EDGC 656 Introduction to Counseling 
  • EDGC 666 Theories of Counseling 
  • EDGC 667 Group Counseling 
  • EDGC 619 Career and Vocational Development 
  • EDGC 661 Measurement Principles and Techniques 
  • (EDGC 656, 666, and 667 must be taken in succession without contrary permission from individual instructors.) 

English as a Second Language 

  • EDSL 601 Linguistics for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • EDSL 602 TESOL Theory and Practice
  • EDSL 603 Language and Culture
  • EDSL 604 TESOL Methods and Materials; course is also available as an extra course; but EDSL 601,602 and 603 are prerequisites to it. 
The Adult and Higher Education program now houses the P-12 ESL endorsement certification courses. The endorsement is available to P-12 certified teachers. However, courses are available to adult and higher education students as an area of specialization.
