Middle Grades Education

Middle grades education at MSU provides initial certification programs for undergraduate and graduate students who want to teach in public middle schools. Students interested in 5-9 certification must select two academic components from English, science, social studies and mathematics, or students may choose coursework for a single component in science.

Our students are immersed in research on effective classroom teaching and pursue coursework in the following:

  • Human growth and development
  • Learning theories, assessment and diversity
  • Educational methods and technology
  • Classroom organization and management.

Extensive field experiences will accompany all of your instructional methods classes. Students complete 200 hours of field experience before their final semester of student teaching begins.

During your semester of student teaching you will have the chance to work under experienced educators who will mentor you and provide you with feedback to improve your skills. The experience you earn with us will prepare you professionally to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds who have a wide variety of needs.
