Whether you’re new to MSU or a returning student, the Department of Mathematics and Physics has resources available to help you succeed not only as a student, but after graduation as well.

 

Research and Internship Opportunities

Involvement in academic research and internships can be a valuable asset, because it gives you practical, real-world skills before you graduate, giving you an advantage as you enter a competitive job market.



Learning Resources

Whether you need help charting the course of your academic career or help studying for a big exam, MSU and the Department of Mathematics and Physics offer a number of resources to help you succeed.

  • Mathematics Tutoring Lab: Located at 108 Lappin Hall, the lab offers free mathematics tutoring to students. 
  • College of Science Student Services Center: The College of Science, which includes the Department of Mathematics and physics, offers dedicated academic advisors to help guide students down the path to success.
  • Tutoring and Learning Center: The MSU Tutoring and Learning Center offers help in virtually every subject. Students can get help with assignments, test preparation, developing good study habits and more.
  • The Mathematics and Physics tutoring lab is open Monday through Friday during each semester. Tutors are available to help students with class assignments, test preparation and more. Hours are as follows:
Spring semester: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Summer I and Summer II: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Fall Semester: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

  • Faculty and Staff: Faculty members in the Department of Mathematics and Physics are committed to helping students succeed, and can meet with you during their office hours to discuss any issues you may be having in a specific class.
  • MEJAM: The Morehead Electronic Journal of Applied Mathematics is an interdisciplinary journal, sponsored by Morehead State University, which publishes the work of undergraduate students. The goal of MEJAM is to provide a refereed outlet for undergraduates in any discipline to publish quality papers and see the results quickly.


 

Career Resources

Graduates of our department go on to pursue successful careers in a wide variety of fields. The University offers a number of resources designed to help graduates find employment after graduation.

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook: Published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Occupational Outlook Handbook contains information about average salary, job descriptions, employment forecasts and more for a wide array of career fields.
  • Career Services: MSU Career Services offers students from all departments opportunities to hone their research and resume writing skills, a suit bank to help students dress for success, career counseling, job search coaching and more. You can also use the Connecting a Major to Careers tool to learn more about how your degree will put you on a rewarding career path. 
 

Our Facilities

The department has a number of facilities available to students, including:

  • Physics Workshop - The Physics Workshop is a space equipped for physics students to work on assignments and projects.
  • Student Lounge - The student lounge is a space where  students in the department can relax and unwind between classes. The lounge offers comfortable seating, a refrigerator and a microwave for students to use. Recreational reading materials are also offered in the lounge.
