Giving you the field experience you need
For aspiring educators, programs in MSU's Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education provide thorough preparation and strong support in an environment that facilitates hands-on, personalized learning in the classroom combined with extensive field experiences. Our students are immersed in research on effective classroom teaching and pursue coursework in the following:
- Human growth and development
- Learning theories, assessment and diversity
- Educational methods and technology
- Classroom organization and management.
Extensive field experiences will accompany all of your instructional methods classes. Students complete 200 hours of field experience before their final semester of student teaching begins.
During your semester of student teaching you will have the chance to work under experienced educators who will mentor you and provide you with feedback to improve your skills. The experience you earn with us will prepare you professionally to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds who have a wide variety of needs.
Advising and Teacher Education Services
Faculty and staff members at MSU celebrate your success and support you through challenges – in and outside of the classroom. We are dedicated to your goals and what it takes to achieve them. Advising is a crucial element in the successful completion of the Teacher Education Program. The College of Education Advising Center provides you access to staff and services focused on helping you as you progress through your degree and stay up-to-date with changes in teacher education. MSU's office of Teacher Education Services will also provide you with the information, guidance and support services you need as you work towards your goal of completing the Teacher Education Program and initial teaching certification.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
If you are a professional who has earned an undergraduate degree and would like to attain teacher certification and a graduate degree, our department offers Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
programs in middle grades (5-9) and secondary education. The MAT offers an opportunity for candidates to earn Professional Teaching Certification while completing a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. The degree provides candidates who have been granted a Temporary Provisional Certificate with a mechanism for refining and demonstrating their teaching skills and competencies during participation in the MAT program.
