Kentucky’s Council on Postsecondary Education approved two new academic programs for Morehead State University. During Friday’s (Feb. 14)  quarterly meeting held at Marriott Griffin Gate, in Lexington, the CPE approved the Bachelor of Arts in Convergent Media and the Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Communication.

“These two new programs developed by our faculty will empower our students as engaged citizens of the Commonwealth and provide them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to be highly successful in the global 21st century workplace,” said Dr. M. Scott McBride, dean of the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Bachelor of Arts in Convergent Media program will replace two tracks that are currently part of the B.A. in Communication: Multimedia Journalism and Multimedia Production. The program combines the previous two into one inclusive curriculum, while adding aspects of graphic design and Web design. The program integrates traditional print and broadcast content into an interactive online medium, providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be media professionals.

The Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Communications will replace three tracks that are currently part of the B.A. in Communication: Communication Studies, Leadership Studies, and Public Relations. The program combines the previous three while emphasizing online, social media, event planning and leadership studies. This integrated approach is in response to industry demands for graduates with a diverse set of communication knowledge and skills.

In other business, the Council on Postsecondary Education elected Pam Miller of Lexington as chair and Dan Flanagan of Campbellsville as vice chair.

The CPE is a statewide coordinating agency whose board is comprised of 15 members, including 13 citizens, one faculty member, and one student appointed by the Governor. The Commissioner of Education is an ex-officio member.
