Morehead State University’s welcomed back speech team members earlier this summer for a reunion.

More than 40 attended the two-day event. The group began the weekend on Friday evening with a welcome reception hosted at the Kentucky Folk Art Center. Saturday included a campus tour followed by a meeting with Dr. Scott McBride, dean of the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Keith Terry, chair of the Department of Communication, Media, and Leadership Studies. The group then enjoyed lunch at Cave Run Lake Spillway.  A “Walk of Memories” social hour preceded a banquet held Saturday evening at the Adorn Doran University Center.

“The first Individual Events Speech Team Reunion was a great success. Former team members from three decades of the team gathered at beautiful MSU to reconnect and meet new friends,” said Cathy Thomas (80).

“The weekend culminated with a banquet that included memories, much laughter, and the induction of 16 alumni into the Harlen Hamm Forensics Hall of Fame. All agreed that our team experiences at our wonderful alma mater were among the most enriching of our lives,” said Randy Turner (80).

Inducted into the Harlen Hamm Forensics Hall of Fame were: John Edwards (78), Mike Clark (77), Cathy Figg Gaston (80), Brian Gardner (93), Rachel Craft Warnecke (93), April Erdmann Zderad (93), Chance Pennington (91), Virginia Landreth-Etherton (78), Kellie Crump (91), Vonda Ramey Melton (87), Margaret Holt Duncan (87), Lisa Shemwell (86), Keith Murphy (84), Cathy Thomas (80), Kevin Porter (79) and Randy Turner (80).

Selection Committee members were: Thomas (coach, 1987-88); Phil Martin (coach, 1983-86); and Chip Letzgus (coach, 1978-82).

Hamm taught speech and theatre at the University of Breckinridge before eventually being promoted to full professor. He served multiple terms as state chairman of nearly every speech and theatre professional organization. Hamm received the MSU Founders Day Award in 1995 and was twice named Outstanding MSU Fundraiser of the Year.

Reunion Planning Committee members were: Rita Rike Perkins (79); Porter, Thomas and Turner. According to committee members, another reunion will be held in the future.
