MSU's Star Theater

Space Science Center to host Observe the Moon Night events

MSU’s Space Science Center (SSC) will host a free public event as part of International Observe the Moon Night, Thursday, Oct. 18.

The SSC will have a variety of telescopes set up on the patio for people to try out. There will be activities inside the Space Science Center, where the Geology Club will be selling hot dogs and chili and there will be a variety of children’s activities. In addition, there will be several moon-themed presentations in the Star Theater during the event. The schedule is:

    •    7 p.m. - Earth, Moon, and Sun Show
    •    7:35 p.m. - Origin of the Moon Talk by Dr. Eric Jerde
    •    8:10 p.m. - Lunar Ice Cube talk by Dr. Ben K. Malphrus
    •    8:45 p.m.- Evidence that We Really Went talk by Dr. Eric Jerde
    •    9:20 p.m. - Dark Side of the Moon Laser Show

“This provides people with an opportunity to learn about the moon,” said Eric Jerde, chair of MSU’s Department of Earth and Space Sciences. “The public has largely forgotten about it, and headlines about space are now focused more on the Space Station or Mars and other planets. The moon is something we all see very often, yet seldom think about.” He added anyone who has ever had questions about the moon should attend the event.
