Get Outdoors - Hike & Bike Morehead

Morehead is designated a Kentucky Trail Town and is nestled in the Daniel Boone National Forest, close to Cave Run Lake and many other outdoor recreation areas. Numerous trails are established on campus, throughout town, and in the surrounding hills that affords us the opportunity to explore this magnificent area. Hiking, backpacking, biking, climbing, kayaking and canoeing are all popular recreation activities in Morehead. We invite you to join us! We encourage walking and cycling on campus as the preferred method of transportation to improve our health and the environment.

The Campus Mobility Policy is located in the Eagle Student Handbook Appendix S pg. 99-100. The policy covers motorized and un-motorized equipment including bicycles, mopeds, skateboards, hoverboards and other devices. Please familiarize yourself with the campus mobility policy before using mobility devices on campus. Campus bicycle parking map (rack locations).

Hiking & Biking Resources - What to Know Before You Go

General Safety Tips for Hiking, Backpacking, Climbing, Biking, etc.
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when to expect you to check in or return. Cell phone service is not always reliable.
  • Don’t forget the essentials, such as a good supply of water, first aid supplies, food, flashlight, map of area, stable & reliable footwear, gear to protect you from the sun and insect bites, gear repair kits and a bag to carry out your trash.
  • Know what wildlife you may encounter and how to protect yourself from harm. "Be Bear Aware!" Bears and a few venomous snakes exist in Eastern Kentucky, although encounters with them are rare.
  • Always check the weather forecast and be prepared to take shelter if there is a chance of storms.
  • Always check for special alerts, conditions and closures in the Daniel Boone National Forest
