Dr. Edna Schack, professor of education in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Special Education, was recently published in the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education. Dr. Schack’s research article, titled “Prospective elementary school teachers’ professional noticing of children’s early numeracy,” was based on research funded by the National Science Foundation’s Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM (TUES) program. The study explores the development of prospective elementary school teachers’ ability to recognize and act on key indicators significant to teaching mathematics, which can positively affect student learning. Collaborators on the article include Molly Fisher, University of Kentucky; Jonathan Thomas, Northern Kentucky University; Sara Eisenhardt, Northern Kentucky University; Janet Tassell, Western Kentucky University; and Margaret Yoder, Eastern Kentucky University. The article appears in the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, Volume 16, No. 3. An abstract is available online.

2012 Distinguished Researcher Award recipient Dr. Lesia Lennex, Professor in the Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education, presented at the 2013 Research and Creative Productions Committee Annual Scholars Luncheon April 29, 2013. Associate Professor of Geology & Science Education Jen O'Keefe has been awarded an NSF EPSCoR Regional Research Enhancement Grant. Dr. O'Keefe will collaborate with the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research Petrology Laboratory to study the development of ancient organic sediments through palynology/mycology, organic petrography, geochemistry, and stratigraphic relationships, allowing them to explore past climate systems and predict future events. Associate Professor of Biology Janelle Hare has been awarded a $248,000 competitive renewal on her existing National Institutes of Health (NIH) Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grant. The project, titled Mechanisms of Action of UmuD in Regulating DNA Damage-Induced Genes in a umuC Def," investigates how the DNA damage response to antibiotic treatment of bacteria leads to the spread of antibiotic resistance and other virulence genes among bacteria.
