Leading Edge

What is Leading Edge?

Leading Edge is a new leadership program sponsored out of the Office of Student Activities. Leading Edge participants are a select group of students who participate in a structured year-long experience designed to develop their leadership skills. Participation is limited to a select 20 participants a year. The 2009-2010 class of Leading Edge is the pilot program.

Who can apply?

The program is open to students who will be Sophomores or Juniors by the start of Fall 2009 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Students from the regional campuses may also participate in this program. Workshops will only be held on the main campus at launch, so those that wish to participate must be able to attend workshops on the main campus.

What do Leading Edge participants do and what are the benefits?

Participants will be required to participate in a series of activities designed to enhance leadership skills as well as to provide them with networking opportunities with individuals throughout campus and the state of Kentucky in their fields of interest. They will also be paired with a mentor in their career field. The program provides a wide array of possibilities for enhancing participants resumes including possible internship opportunities. The community created among these students stimulates intellectual growth and provides a support system encouraging ambition and success. Participants are recognized for completion of the program at the end of the year and will receive a certificate of completion.

Tentative Schedule
Fall Semester: initial information session, 3 workshops and networking reception

Spring Semester: 3 workshops, attendance at Emerging Leaders Symposium (if not already attended in past), program ending ceremony

Participants will be required to complete 15 hours of community service throughout the 2009-2010 year on their own time. Participants will also meet with their mentor on a schedule that they collaborate on. We encourage activities with mentors such as job shadowing, etc.
