The conference provides us an opportunity to strengthen and extend our writers' community. Please make plans to come and visit with other writers and share in the workshops, sessions, and presentations. We also have a Call for Papers for presenters. This is a wonderful opportunity to present works on Appalachian literary heritage, the works of new authors, and a celebration of veteran Appalachian authors. We welcome members from throughout the Appalachian region who write in a wide range of genres and disciplines, from storytellers to lyricists, from academics to popular writers. Our membership includes people from all experiences, stages of career, and all ages. As you explore our website, we hope that you will consider joining us.

Writers are encouraged to submit their books of fiction, nonfiction and poetry for the Appalachian Writers Association Appalachian Book of the Year (ABOY) Award. In addition, there are five contests: (1) The James Still Award for Poetry, (2)The Harriette Arnow Award for Short Story, (3) The Wilma Dykeman Award for Essay, (4) The Josefina Niggli Award for Playwriting, and (5) The Tom Jackson Short Story Award. For more information, visit the ABOY page and the contest page.

The Appalachia Writers Association is a not-for-profit organization.

Ten Ways to Get the Most from your AWA Membership and AWA Conference Participation

1. Keep in touch - We can share our website and present your big news announcement. We can also hyperlink to members' websites. Let us know about your publications, book tours, workshops, conferences, conference presentations, and other accomplishments. If your school, college, university, or organization is hosting a writers' event, let us know. Members, please keep us up to date on contact information.

2. Prepare manuscripts for our AWA Contests.

3. Read and review work by other members.

4. Nominate a worthy book for our AWA Appalachian Book of the Year Award. Nominate an influential writer for our Contributions to Appalachian Literature Award. Books can be self-nominated.

5. Volunteer your own expertise for a session in the conference. Your experiences can help others achieve more success as writers.

6. If your talents lie in scholarly analysis of work, submit a paper proposal for the conference.

7. Serve as a liaison between the AWA and other likely members and presenters.

8. Consider hosting the conference in your hometown.

9. Join other writers' groups, and tell them about AWA.

10. Write. Do not talk about what you want to write. Determine that you are a writer, and write.
