Information

At the Morehead State University Department of Art and Design faculty are dedicated to helping you develop the attitudes, values, and ideas which will accompany you through your personal and professional life. Our visual arts programs will provide you with the opportunity to realize your full potential. We invite you to join a community of people who make art and design their top priority.

The department provides an undergraduate program which prepares students for a career in art education, graphic design, studio practice, art related professions or advanced study. All majors are provided a diverse, well-rounded general education by the required university core curriculum which seeks to develop a student's analytical and communication skills, and encourages an appreciation for their culture and world. Required introductory survey and period courses in Art History provide knowledge of cultural contexts and significant achievements of major artists and movements. Studio classes are limited to 20 students, affording quality student/teacher interaction. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who is consulted about course scheduling and career options. Contributing to the energy and visibility of our program is the Claypool-Young Gallery which serves the educational needs of the Art and Design Department and is a cultural resource for the community and the state.

Program
The department offers an undergraduate major, minor and area of concentration with opportunities in ceramics, computer art, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, art education, and art history. A teaching certificate may be obtained with additional course work in the College of Education. The department also offers a masters degree with tracks in studio art, graphic design, and art education.

The Bachelor of Arts degree program provides art majors with high-quality instruction in basic studio areas within the curriculum. Students who have earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Arts with an emphasis in any discipline will have a broad academic background and sufficient artistic skills to qualify for entry level positions in a wide range of art related fields. The Studio Arts faculty provides assistance and counseling in regard to graduate school and opportunities as a professional practicing artist. To further insure that students are prepared for professional activity they are required to take Art 499 Senior Capstone which includes instruction in portfolio preparation, copy work, gallery and museum exhibition, broad based art careers and graduate school application.

Curriculum
The curriculum is divided into three general categories: studio art, art education and art history. Freshman courses provide students with an introduction to basic materials, concepts, and skills common to all areas. The program requires that students successfully complete fundamental courses to master basic techniques in drawing, color, 2D and 3D design, and Apple Macintosh computer technology.

Sophomore courses introduce students to specific skills and problem solving in particular disciplines such as ceramics, painting/drawing, printmaking, sculpture and graphic design. During the sophomore year students participate in a Sophomore Review Exhibition. The review is used to track the students development in their course work. The review further fosters positive interaction between faculty and students in the department.

Junior and senior courses stress theory, creative problem solving, craftsmanship and technology appropriate to the concept, the development of individual approaches, and sophisticated mastery of each particular discipline.

The senior exhibition, which is completed by all B.A. majors, will effectively synthesize each student's accumulated conceptual and creative faculties with his or her technical and production knowledge to demonstrate the level of artistic maturation expected in a graduating B.A. student.

Faculty

Among the factors used to determine the quality of an art program is the quality of the faculty and of their research and professional activities. Many faculty are members of professional organizations and attend regional, national and international professional conferences. Studio artists present one-person or group shows at professional galleries, art museums or other universities. They also show their work in national juried exhibitions, where selection for inclusion in the exhibition is made by prestigious professionals in the arts. In conjunction with shows and juried exhibitions, they often give lectures or hold workshops. Faculty in more commercially oriented areas practice professional graphic design, web design or multi-media for business, education, and industry. All faculty are actively involved in student advisement. Through recommendations and professional contacts, they help students in employment searches and professional advancement.

Facilities
The Claypool-Young Building with its distinctive architectural style stands out on campus. One feature of the Claypool-Young Building architecture are its north-facing skylights. With most of the studios situated on the north side of the building Morehead State students have the advantage of working in studios with the north light so prized by artists and designers.

Each area of the program requires special equipment and studio space specific to the teaching of that discipline. For example the teaching of studio art requires welding and woodworking equipment, pottery throwing wheels, kilns, printing presses, easels and painting storage racks, special drawing tables and much more. Graphic Design and Computer Art require state-of-the-art computer equipment, software programs, scanners, printers and digital photography labs. Art History has a large auditorium with the latest slide projectors, screens and audio equipment for lectures.
