Welcome!
Pursuit of the B. S. degree in Biology provides pre-professional training that highly qualifies the graduate for entry into several post-graduate programs such as medical, dental, physical therapy, physician assistant , pharmacy, and chiropractic schools, all of which provide career opportunities in the ever expanding health care industry. The technical skills that can be acquired also prepare the student for graduate programs in the life sciences and/or employment in the emerging biotechnology industry. Medical technologists are in great demand in research laboratories, the medical industry, forensic sciences, governmental health departments, and large clinical laboratories. Students pursuing the Biology Teaching option will find numerous opportunities in P-12 education upon completion of their program. The Environmental Science option prepares graduates for employment in private industry, government agencies, municipalities, research institutions, and ecological contracting firms.
For the undergraduate student, we offer three general programs of study that lead to the Bachelor of Science Degree in the Biology Area of Concentration: Biology, Non-Teaching (Option 1); Biology Teaching (Option 2); and Environmental Science (Option 3). Students that are pursuing any of our pre-professional programs will be enrolled in Option 1. We also offer a Master of Science in Biology degree program of study. See the menu on the left for more information and curriculum maps for all of our programs.
Our department is housed in Lappin Hall, home to several laboratories fully equipped with modern instrumentation utilized in the life sciences, including: laboratory facilities designed for state-of-the-art instruction and training in genetics, microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, and biotechnology; modern ecology and environmental testing laboratories; and recently constructed greenhouse and animal care facilities. One of the strengths of our undergraduate programs is the significant laboratory component of the courses and the training of students in a variety of research methodologies. Recent renovation of existing classroom facilities in Lappin Hall allows the Department to employ multimedia technology in classroom instruction.
We hope that you will contact us directly after exploring our website to arrange a visit to our campus. We will be happy to give you a tour of our facilities, introduce you to our faculty and students, and address all of your questions about our programs. Until then, enjoy your visit to our website!
