Overview
The pre-physical therapy program at Morehead State University prepares students for admission to Physical Therapy school. To become a physical therapist, a student must complete at least three years of a pre-physical therapy program (preferably a full bachelor’s degree) followed by approximately three years of a professional component at the University of Kentucky's physical therapy school. This leads to a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. The Bellarmine University requires that a student complete their 4-year degree prior to admission to their physical therapy program. The University of Kentucky's requirements have undergone changes in recent years, and students are advised to check their website for continuing updates (see link below). In addition, students must have a certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for adults, children, and infants by the American Heart Association for the Health Professional or the American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer. (Note: the Community CPR course offered by the American Red Cross is not acceptable.) Certification in first aid by the American Red Cross is also required before entry to the program.Following completion of the pre-physical therapy curriculum, you must apply to a physical therapy school for the professional component. The admission criteria for the University of Kentucky are based on overall grade point average (GPA), "key" GPA (composed of 8 science and math courses), GRE scores, a total of 50 hours (minimum, 200-300 hours is more competitive) of volunteer or paid work experience with at least 2 physical therapists, and interviews. Current acceptance averages for 2005 were: GPA=3.4, and key GPA=3.4, GRE (verbal and quantitative) = 1019. Physical therapy is an outstanding profession and has a very bright future!
