Program Information

Master of Arts in Counseling

Admission Requirements

1. General admission to graduate study.

2. A GRE score of 800 (verbal and quantitative) with a minimum verbal score of 350 or a raw score of 33 (385-390 Scaled Score) on the Miller Analogy Test is required.

3. TOEFL 525 (197 computer based) or 74 on English Language Instruction Test of the University of Michigan.

Requirements for the Degree

1. Satisfy the general degree requirements.

2. If a student has not become unconditionally admitted after completing twelvegraduate hours, he/she will not be allowed to register for additional hours.

3. All graduate students pursuing programs of study in the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult and Higher Education must maintain a 3.0 graduate GPA. Students falling below a 3.0 will be placed on a one semester period of probation. Students failing to achieve a graduate GPA of at least 3.0 at the end of the probation semester will be dropped from their respective program. Any student who received grades of “C” in more than two graduate courses will be immediately dropped from his/her respective program.

4. Students are expected to adhere to the ethical standards and guidelines of the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, and/or the American Mental Health Counselors Association. Breach of ethical practices will result in dismissal from the program.

5. Students in practicum and advanced practicum are strongly encouraged to have personal liability coverage. Since teachers in the counseling practicum are doing their practicum work as students rather than professionals, other district and professional insurance may not protect them. An example of this would be Health Care Providers Service Organizations (www.hpso.com). If you have any questions contact any faculty member in the counseling program.

6. Must be unconditionally admitted.

Applicants must meet two of the following three:

1. A minimum combined score on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE of 800 with a minimum verbal score of 350 or a 33 raw score (385-390 Scaled Score) on the Miller Analogy Test is required.

2. GPA of 3.5 on the Master’s degree.

3. Provisional certification in counseling.

Students entering the Rank I program for guidance counselors must successfully complete an oral exit examination, and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Ed.S. in Counseling (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Option)

Admission Requirements

1. A Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Education, orrelated area from an accredited college or university (minimum 66 hour pro-gram) or a Master’s degree in Counseling, Counselor Education, Counseling Psychology or related area from an accredited college or university accept-able to the faculty (minimum 30-hour program).

2. Evidence of superior scholastic performance as indicated by a GPA of 3.5 onall graduate work completed. (3.0 GPA for bachelor’s degree applicants.)

3. A GRE score of 800 on the verbal and quantitative sections with a minimumverbal score of 350 or a 33 raw score (385-390 Scaled Score) on the Miller Analogy Test is required.

4. Interview with the applicant conducted by the admissions committee.

5. Applicant’s background in the area of his or her proposed specialization.

6. Recommendations from selected references.

This program must be planned with the student’s advisor. Students must completea written examination and a sample video tape no less than 30 minutes in lengththat sucessfully demonstrates counseling skill development and maintain a cumu-lative GPA of 3.0.

Ed.S. in Counseling (School Counseling Option)

Admission Requirements

1. A Master’s degree in School Counseling and provisional certification as aschool counselor.

2. One year of successful work experience.

3. Evidence of superior scholastic performance as indicated by a cumulativegraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher.

4. A GRE composite score of 800 on the verbal and quantitative sections with aminimum verbal score of 350 or a 33 raw score (385-390 Scaled Score) onthe Miller Analogy Test is required.
