MORE ABOUT ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Morehead State University offers a wide range of opportunities for
performing arts study. Our nationally accredited degree programs include
majors in theatre, theatre with teaching certification, music
education, performance, accompanying, and jazz studies. There is also
opportunity to minor in dance, theatre, music, and traditional music.
For
those students with a non-teaching undergraduate degree in music and
who wish to pursue teacher certification in music, the Department of
Music, Theatre and Dance also offers a Post-Baccalaureate Integrated
Music P-12 Initial Certification Program.
Our graduate program
offers the Master of Music Degree with concentrations in music education or
performance. Study is centered around a specialization in voice,
instrumental or choral conducting, brasswinds, woodwinds, percussion,
orchestral strings, keyboard instruments, guitar, or jazz.
Undergraduate Programs
Bachelor of Music
Education: This program is designed for students who are planning
for careers as music teachers in the public schools. The BME program
meets the requirements for the Integrated Music P-12 initial
certificate. The Integrated Music P-12 certificate is the Kentucky
license to teach general, instrumental, and vocal music, primary through
12th grade levels.
Bachelor of Music in Performance: The
Bachelor of Music program is designed for musically advanced students
who are planning careers in music as performers and/or private teachers.
It does not meet certification requirements for public school teaching.
The following areas of specialization are available: harpsichord, jazz
studies, organ, piano, strings, theory/composition, voice, winds, brass,
and percussion. It does not meet certification requirements for public
school teaching.
Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies: This
degree program is designed for musically advanced students who are
planning careers in jazz performance and has an emphasis in jazz
performance, improvisation, arranging, history, and literature.
Bachelor
of Arts in Music: The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major or minor
in music provides for the study of music within a liberal arts
curriculum. Emphasis is placed upon the study and performance of music
literature. It is suitable for preparing students for careers in music
other than performance or teaching music in the public schools. A minor area of study is required for this degree.
Bachelor of Arts in Music (Traditional Music): The BA in Music (Traditional Music) degree provides for the study of traditional music as related to the creative cultural interaction in Appalachia that has produced a wealth of distinctive styles of music. As it relates to The Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University, “traditional” music includes Bluegrass, Old Time, Country, Ballad Singing, Blues, Celtic, Western Swing and many other related forms. The music with which we are most involved stems from, or is influenced by the music that is identified with our southern Appalachian mountain region. A minor area of study is required for this degree. This program is offered in cooperation with the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music.
Bachelor
of Arts in Theatre: The BA in Theatre is designed to give students
formal training in all aspects of theatre performance and production
with an emphasis on extensive "hands on" experiences. A minor area of study is required for this degree.
Bachelor
of Arts in Theatre with Teaching Certification: The BA in Theatre
with Teaching Certification is for those students who wish to pursue a
career of teaching theatre in the schools.
Minor in Dance:
For those students who desire to pursue a major in another field but
also with formal training in dance.
Minor in Music: For
those students who desire to pursue a major in a non-music field but
also wish formal study in music.
Minor in Theatre: For
those students who wish to study in a major other than theatre but wish
formal training in theatre.
Minor in Traditional Music:
This program is offered in cooperation with the Kentucky Center for
Traditional Music.
Post-Baccalaureate Integrated Music P-12
Initial Certification Program: For those students with a
non-teaching undergraduate degree in music and wish to pursue teacher
certification in music.
Graduate Programs
Master
of Music: Concentration in Music Education: This option provides a
curriculum that offers both accessibility and flexibility. Several of
the courses for this degree are offered online with future online
courses under development. The flexible curriculum allows for a
significant amount of study in instrumental and choral conducting,
composition, brasswinds, woodwinds, percussion, orchestral strings,
keyboard instruments, guitar, jazz, and Kodaly with additional opportunities to
study music history and literature and music education.
Master
of Music: Concentration in Performance: Study is centered around a
specialization in voice or in instrumental and choral conducting,
composition, brasswinds, woodwinds, percussion, orchestral strings,
keyboard instruments, guitar, and jazz.
