He was MSU's fifth president, serving from 1946 until his death in 1951. Dr. Baird’s education included graduate work at Columbia University, Cornell University, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Kentucky. During a leave of absence from Berea in 1940, he visited 56 campuses in the United States as a representative of the Danforth Foundation. Baird Music Hall was named in his honor.
