A former vice president for academic affairs, he came to the University in 1964 as assistant professor of sociology. He later served as director of admissions (1967-68), dean of graduate programs (1968-75), and vice president and dean of the faculty from 1975 until he returned to full-time teaching. He was chair of Faculty Senate, co-chair of the SACS Self-Study, and served six-years as the faculty representative on the Board of Regents. He served the University for more than 35 years and was named the Outstanding Faculty Fund Raiser for 1992.
