The Departments of Art and Design and International and Interdisciplinary Studies and the Student Activities, Inclusion and Leadership Development invite the entire community to participate in the upcoming Day of the Dead, an annual Mexican holiday dedicated to honoring the memory of our ancestors and loved ones now gone. For this event, MSU and Rowan County High School students, local artists, and other community members have created special tributes designed to celebrate the natural cycle of death and life. This celebration will run from 6-8 p.m. at the Rowan County Arts Center. There will be food , music, art, poetry and games! In addition to this celebration, two free workshops will be held: A Calavera-Writing Workshop will be taught on October 10 and the poems will be read at the November 1 Day of the Dead celebraton. Calaveras are satirical poens written about people in the public eye, friends, family members and others who are still alive. The Kentucky Center for Traditional Music will host a Mariachi Music Workshop taught by Mariachi Aztega from 3-4:30 on November 1 and workshop participants will join in the concert during the 6-8 p.m. celebration. The workshop and the concert will be at the Rowan County Arts Center. Also at the 6-8 p.m. celebration will be traditional Day of the Dead foods.
