Process

A theme for each presidential lecture will be developed by the committee and released to the University community with a request for lecturer nominations. Nominations are made by students, faculty and staff via an online speaker nomination form. The nominations will be reviewed and prioritized by a subcommittee convened by the host college (or Division of Student Life), and recommendations then will be sent to the Presidential Performing Arts and Speakers Program Steering Committee for final selection. Costs for the lecture will be shared between the co-hosting college, the Office of the President, the Division of Student Life, and the MSU Fund for Excellence.

The selection of lecturers/performers is made with the following criteria in mind: 

  • Campus and community awareness and recognition of the lecturer 
  • Breadth of appeal of the topic to students, faculty, staff, and the community 
  • The lecture’s likelihood to stimulate intellectual exchange 
  • The lecture’s likelihood to further student learning goals and campus initiatives 
  • Practical considerations, such as cost and lecturer availability at times consistent with the lecture series calendar 

Lecturers will be expected to give a public lecture or performance understandable and of interest to a general audience, to speak with faculty, staff and students. The PASP and hosting college review subcommittees will provide active support for the lecturer’s campus visit, including hosting activities for the visitor with the appropriate faculty, staff and students, when possible.
