Process

A theme for the lecture will be developed by the committee. Nomination of potential lecturers and topics are made by students, faculty and staff, by completing an online speaker nomination form. Forms completed by students, faculty, and staff will be reviewed by a committee convened by the host college (or Division of Student Life). The College Review Committee coordinates with the Program Committee to prioritize a list of potential lecturers and topics for the coming academic year. Costs for the lecture will be split between the college and Office of the President.

The selection of lecturers/performers is made with the following criteria in mind: 

  • Campus and community awareness and recognition of the lecturer 
  • Breadth of appeal of the topic to students, faculty, staff, and the community 
  • The lecture’s likelihood to stimulate intellectual exchange 
  • The lecture’s likelihood to further student learning goals and campus initiatives 
  • Practical considerations, such as cost and lecturer availability at times consistent with the lecture series calendar 

Lecturers will be expected to spend at least one full day on campus. They will be expected to give a public lecture or performance understandable and of interest to a general audience, to speak with faculty and students, and to present a smaller, more discipline-specific lecture or colloquium directed to an audience of students, faculty, and staff. The PASP and hosting college Review Committees will provide active support for the lecturer’s campus visit, including hosting an informal luncheon or dinner for the visitor with the appropriate faculty, staff and students.
