Bio

Image - Gold Square "Morehead State University is a rare place: a dedicated and world-class faculty, supportive peers, the natural beauty of Eastern Kentucky, and plenty of opportunity to grow as a musician and person. I can't imagine a better place to study music!"
Saxophonist Matthew Taylor connects audiences to today’s music with collaborations between digital artists, dancers, and writers. His playing has been called “eloquent” by the South Florida Classical Review, and “absolutely beautiful” by composer Frank Ticheli. He maintains a vast and constantly evolving repertoire of music by established and emerging composers, and his busy concert schedule has included a variety of genres and venues throughout the United States and Europe, including Miami Beach’s New World Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas, The National Symphony at the John F. Kennedy Center with JoAnn Falletta and Marvin Hamlisch, the Wammy-Award winning new music group Great Noise Ensemble, the Orchestre du Ballet de Bordeaux in France, the World Saxophone Congress, and engagements featuring Patti Austin, The Temptations, Frank Sinatra, Jr and Quincy Jones, among others.
Matthew is also the founder of the DC-based new music group TEMPO, a student-run new music group at the University of Maryland.  He holds degrees in education and performance from the University of Central Arkansas Honors College, University of Maryland, and the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Bordeaux.  He completed his doctorate in saxophone performance as a teaching assistant and a fellow of the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. His principal teachers have included Dale Underwood, Marie-Bernadette Charrier, and Jackie Lamar (saxophone); Whit Sidener, Gary Keller, and Curt Sipe (jazz); and Gary Green and Michael Hancock (conducting).
In addition to his performing activities, Taylor is a passionate music educator. Prior to his appointment at Morehead State University, he developed and implemented a music curriculum for at-risk kids in inner city Miami.
Matthew is a Conn-Selmer artist and performs exclusively on Selmer Paris saxophones.
