Some programs of study may have additional program and/or grade point average requirements based upon accreditation standards and/or the catalog year that you are in.  Students must review the requirements of the specific degree program to determine if there are additional requirements.

All students graduating with a diploma must apply by October 15th for fall and winter sessions and March 15th for spring and summer sessions.

  • A $20 graduation fee must be paid by the specified date for each term. Fees paid after these dates increase to $30. This fee must be paid in order for a student to apply for graduation and is non-refundable. The fee is valid 1 year after application. After 1 year has expired, students are required to re-apply and pay the graduation fee again.
  • Fall, winter, spring and summer candidates participating in commencement will receive a blank diploma cover during the commencement ceremony.
  • Diplomas will be available approximately four weeks after the end of the term and may be picked up in the Registrar’s Office or mailed to the address provided on your degree application. You will be notified via your MSU email address when your diploma is ready.

 Graduating with Honors

Bachelor degree candidates who complete at least 43 credits at MSU with an institutional GPA of 3.5 to 4.0 through the student’s last fully completed and graded semester will be recognized during the commencement ceremony as graduating “with honors.” Specific honors of summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude will not be reflected in the commencement program.

Associate degree candidates who complete at least 32 credits at MSU with an institutional GPA of 3.6 to 4.0 through the student’s last fully completed and graded semester will be recognized “with distinction.”

Students entitled to commencement honors will be notified via their MSU email address and will receive a gold cord from the Registrar’s Office at no cost to them to wear at the commencement ceremony. Honor cords are distributed to only those students participating in the ceremony. If a student is not participating in the ceremony and has honors, the appropriate honors will be noted on the student's official transcript and diploma.

Master, Ed.S., and Doctoral degree candidates do not receive honors.
