ENG 090 – Developmental Writing

The Developmental Writing course is a placement composition course which reviews basic grammar, punctuation and mechanics and emphasizes writing/revising for clarity and correctness.

ENG 099 – Basic Writing

The Basic Writing course is designed to provide students with an intensive opportunity to develop entry-level writing skills of critical importance in ENG 100—specifically, a basic ability to read, write and reason analytically, as well as to incorporate and document basic research into one’s own writing.

Which developmental english course should I take?

Students should enroll in Developmental Writing (ENG 090) if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • English ACT score of 13 or less
  • COMPASS score  of 0 to 5

Students should enroll in Basic Writing (ENG 099) if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • English ACT score of 14 to 17
  • COMPASS score of 6 to 8
