With the completion of the Center of Health Education and Research (CHER) building in 2010, Morehead State was able to advance its already impressive nursing program, the latest medical and educational technologies to give students a unique, hands-on learning experience. Computerized mannequins programmed to mimic a wide range of illnesses and patient profiles allow students opportunities to care for individuals and face real-world scenarios which may be unavailable to students in hospital settings. Skill sets are honed as students become "working nurses" during full-scale simulations that may include calling providers for medical orders, prioritizing and delegating care for multiple clients and interacting with the interprofessional team.
The two labs house computerized mannequins that are programmed to mimic a wide range of illnesses and patient profiles allowing students opportunities to care for individuals and situations, which may be unavailable to students in hospital settings. Lab 301 Acute Unit is a 10-bed hospital type floor setup with a critical care unit (CCU) room housed within. Lab 302 Maternal/Obstetrics is set up as a 10-bed unit with a birthing room as the centerpiece. Skill sets are honed as students become "working nurses" during full-scale simulations that may include calling providers for medical orders, prioritizing and delegating care for multiple clients, and interacting with the interprofessional team.
Labs 307 and 309
Room 307 Pediatrics welcomes families and maintains a Neonatal/Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (NICU/PICU). Room 309 Physical Assessment is uniquely outfitted as a 10-bed patient assessment area. Students learn hands-on adult and pediatric patient assessment, communication techniques, medication administration, as well as a multitude of skills required of registered nurses.
Lab 414 Multi-Media Center
The Multi-Media Lab consists of 50 computers that house a number of helpful programs that are used by the students in the CHER building. The machines house the software that nursing students use for testing and practice. The lab has a printer in the facility for students to print out materials as needed. Located in the back of the lab are a number of multi-media resources used by students. This lab also houses the Multi Media Lab Coordinator and IT Specialist, who work with students on technology and who oversee testing.
Lab 413 Testing Center
This lab houses 55 computers that are used by all students in the building. This lab has state-of-the-art testing desks to allow for either electronic testing or paper testing as needed. The lab has eight cameras which consistently monitor students as they take exams. This facility can also be used as an instruction room.
