Morehead State has three intercollegiate equine teams, each
with a history of success in competition. Members of the equine teams are also members of the MSU Equestrian Club.
The Hunt Seat Team is a smaller team with only 10 riders, but
it is known in the region to have strong riders competing in the
Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). MSU riders have recently
competed at regionals to the zone level of competition. Hunt seat riders
have the choice to be in a flat practice as well as a jumping practice.
The main emphasis put on hunters is in equitation and equitation over
The Western Seat Team has had continued success as one of
the top two teams in Zone 6 Region 3 during the last four years. We are proud
to be the 2011-2012 Zone 6 Region 3 Champions, and have had individual riders
competing at regional horse shows, semi finals and nationals. The team usually
has 13 to 15 members who ride in team practices in addition to their University
riding class. The main focus of both the MSU program and IHSA events is
horsemanship and reining.
Since IHSA allows a division for all levels of riding, whether
you are a new rider or have shown on the A circuit/AQHA shows, MSU equestrian teams
would be happy to have you join the fun.
Saddle Seat Team members are responsible for both riding and long
lining/jogging each week, as well as long-term upkeep on the horses such as
grooming their tails, clipping, etc. Although the smallest of the three teams
at MSU, it can’t be argued the saddle seat team is a close-knit and hard
working bunch. Recently, the MSU Saddle Seat Team won the High Points Award at the ISSRA Championship Show in Lexington. Two team members won awards as High Points Riders of the Year. Meagan Darby won High Points Senior Rider and Katie Roberts won High Points Junior Rider.
