The Interdisciplinary Women's Studies program provides a minor for Morehead State University undergraduates. Students explore gender and issues related to gender within a wide range of disciplines such as literature, political science, communication, sociology, history, health, and education. Students develop career skills through special problems and community service opportunities. Women's Studies emphasizes critical thinking, which can be applied to a multitude of careers. Having a minor in Women's Studies helps professionals to become aware of sexist, racist, and other biases in the business world. An education in Women's Studies makes one more sensitive and therefore more prepared to do all jobs with greater attention to ethical standards. There is growing demand in the professions of law, medicine, social work, teaching, counseling, and government service for expertise on gender issues. Perhaps most importantly, many Women's Studies graduates say that their education gave them the confidence to pursue careers traditionally held by men. Our Mission
The Interdisciplinary Women's Studies program seeks to provide students with an understanding of how gender is constructed and employed in educational, historical, aesthetic, sociological, and political contexts. The intention is to equip students with the knowledge and analytical abilities needed to recognize and transform gender inequality in their own lives and in the world at large. Our goal is to provide MSU and its surrounding community with events, programs, and courses that raise awareness of women's particular situations and to support feminist student activism.
The purpose of the program is:
- to inform students of the diversity of women's contributions across academic disciplines in a multicultural and global society;
- to increase students' knowledge of the varied contributions of women throughout history;
- to challenge students;
- to use a variety of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to recognize and contend with gender inequality at the individual and social level;
- to expand students' knowledge and consciousness regarding their choices in families, politics, work, and leisure.
