Master of Science in General-Experimental Psychology

Program Requirements
Note: The program requirements outlined on this page are unofficial. Consult the 2013-14 graduate catalog for the official program requirements.

The Master's Program in General-Experimental Psychology program has two options. The Experimental Psychology option prepares students for doctoral level training. This option requires the student to complete a master's thesis under the supervision of a faculty member. The General Psychology option provides students with a broad knowledge of behavior combined with behavioral research skills. This option requires the student to complete a research project, smaller in scope than a thesis, under the supervision of a faculty member. Both options are 33-hour programs.

EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY

Core (12 hours)
Students must complete all of the following:

PSY 612 – Advanced Experimental Design and Analysis I
PSY 613 – Advanced Experimental Design and Analysis II
PSY 699 – Thesis

Electives (21 hours)
Students must complete seven additional 600-level courses

GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY

Core (9 hours)
Students must complete all of the following:

PSY 612 – Advanced Experimental Design and Analysis I
PSY 613 – Advanced Experimental Design and Analysis II
PSY 690 – Psychological Research

Area Requirements (18 hours)
Students must complete at least six of the following:

PSY 621 – Advanced Physiological Psychology
PSY 633 – Personality Theory
PSY 634 – Learning Theory
PSY 636 – Seminar in Cognitive Psychology
PSY 654 – Seminar in Social Psychology
PSY 677 – Seminar in Developmental Research
PSY 684 – Sensation and Perception

Electives (6 hours)
Students must complete two additional 600-level courses

Graduate assistantships (GAs) are available to students who are unconditionally admitted to the Master's Program in General-Experimental Psychology. GAs offer up to $10,000 per academic year and, for non-residents of Kentucky, a waiver of out-of-state tuition (i.e., non-residents pay only in-state tuition). NOTE: GAs are limited and may not be available to all students who are unconditionally admitted.

1. Completion of an undergraduate major in psychology or an equivalent program of study that includes course work in experimental design and data analysis

2. Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher

3. Preferred GRE scores of 151 or higher for verbal reasoning and 148 or higher for quantitative reasoning

4. Three letters of recommendation. The recommendation form can be downloaded here .

5. A statement of purpose by the applicant outlining his or her reasons for seeking graduate level training in General-Experimental Psychology

An applicant who does not have a sufficiently high GRE score or undergraduate GPA may be admitted if there is sufficient evidence that the applicant will succeed in the program.
