Camden-Carroll Library Prize for Undergraduate Research

The purpose of the Camden-Carroll Library Prize for Undergraduate Research is to recognize and celebrate outstanding, original undergraduate research that incorporates the use of library resources at Morehead State University.  The award is given to students who exhibit exemplary information literacy skills (the ability to find, evaluate, and use information from a variety of sources with proper citation).  Entries are judged on how well the student's research paper demonstrates appropriate and effective use of library resources, and on the accompanying essay about the research process.  The prize is sponsored by Camden-Carroll Library.

A $500 award is given annually in recognition of outstanding undergraduate library-based research.  Each year, an award is given only if entries meriting recognition are received.

  • The competition is open to complete, original, individually-created papers, or other projects in any medium, which make use of library-based resources.
  • Entries must be produced by undergraduate students currently enrolled full-time at Morehead State University, or students who have graduated from MSU in the current academic year.
  • Submitted entries must have been completed for a credit course, or for another faculty-mentored project at MSU.
  • To be considered, participants must agree to public display of the winning entry and photo of the winner, and must agree to submit the winning entry for inclusion in the MSU archives.
  • To receive the prize money, participants must appear in person at the annual MSU Academic Awards Convocation.

 A committee of MSU librarians, faculty, and staff will judge entries based on the following:

  • Depth and breadth of library resources used.
  • Evidence of learning and an understanding of the research process.
  • Demonstration of information literacy skills:
    • Determining the extent of information needed to accomplish task;
    • Accessing the needed information effectively and efficiently;
    • Evaluating information and its sources critically;
    • Organizing and synthesizing information for a stated purpose;
    • Using information ethically, legally, and effectively to accomplish the specific purpose.*
