Equine Program

MSU's equine program offers students both science-based educational experiences and practical riding and equitation teaching skills. We strive for academic excellence and have an outstanding faculty who focus on students, providing as much one-on-one attention as possible. Labs are purposefully kept small so each student can participate in the day’s activities.
We have a state-of-the-art Equine Health Education Center complete with a surgical suite and a large animal veterinary clinic, so students learn with the most technologically advanced equipment used in real-life situations.
MSU has a fully equipped equine breeding facility where students work with all aspects of the breeding process.

Equine facilities include:

  • Heated indoor riding arena which seats 2,000 people. The arena is used for shows, sales and more
  • Spacious outdoor arena
  • 81 stalls in three barns
  • Four large paddocks for horses

Equine Teams

MSU offers intercollegiate show teams in the following disciplines:

  • Hunt Seat
  • Stock Seat
  • Saddle Seat

You can bring your own horse with you to college and board it at the Derrickson Agricultural Complex.

MSU’s Equine Stock

The Derrickson Agricultural Complex is home to 40 horses of different breeds used in weekly team practices as well as riding classes and workouts. All of the horses have had experience in the show ring, either with team members or summer lessees, and have proved their worth through their versatility and ability to go from lesson horse to show horse.
The MSU equine family does have a great group of horses for the team to practice on. There are quarter horses, thoroughbreds, paints, warm bloods, hunter ponies and appaloosas to ride during the team practices. MSU promises to have a horse to match your riding level and experience.
All Equine Team members are also part of MSU’s Equestrian Club, which is open to anyone interested in the program regardless of experience. Overall, all three teams and club members work as a single entity and make for a great environment to learn and enjoy the Equestrian field.
