Bio

Dr. Rajeev Madhavannair was born and raised in Cochin, Kerala State, India. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calicut in Kerala, India. After working for a year as a design engineer for Holmarc Opto-Mechatronics Pvt. Ltd. (then called Holmarc Slides and Controls, Pvt. Ltd.), Dr. Nair came to the United States with full scholarship for his Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. There he worked on a Boeing research project that focused on design, finite element analysis, simulation and experimental methodology of various drill bits. After graduating in May 2002, he was accepted in the mechanical engineering department at Iowa State University as a PhD student with his research primarily focusing on laser assisted rapid prototyping; laser based flexible fabrication and coatings, and the tribological and thermal transport phenomenon study of laser material processing. Dr. Madhavannair received the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) associate certification from Iowa State University in May, 2004. He graduated with Iowa State University’s PhD in December, 2006.

As a graduate student, Dr. Madhavannair was a teaching assistant at Wichita State University for the Computer-Aided Design lab as well as the Finite Element Analysis lab. He was also a teaching assistant for the Manufacturing Processes lab at Iowa State University during his graduate studies. Dr. Madhavannair was a lecturer in the mechanical engineering department at Iowa State University from January 2007 to May 2009 having taught eight different courses in the fields of design and manufacturing. His teaching experience includes undergraduate courses to a graduate course. These have included courses in Engineering Fundamentals, Basic Design, Manufacturing Processes, Engineering Graphics, Machine Design, System Machine Design, Computer-Aided Design and Materials Design for Manufacturing Processes.

Dr. Madhavannair is also the recipient of three National Science Foundation SBIR (small business innovative research) awards while working as a project engineer for Photon Energy Technology, Inc., in Ames, Iowa. Dr. Madhavannair’s post doctoral research study under Dr. Pal Molian, Professor, Mechanical Engineering department, focused on pulsed laser deposition, laser shock peening and laser sintering processes. He has published numerous papers in various peer-reviewed journals and presented in major conferences here in the United States and outside.
