Winning 31 National Championship between Co-ed, All- Girl squad and Stunt-teams, Morehead State University is well known for producing the best cheerleaders in the nation. Being true to the term, student-athlete, MSU cheerleaders are diligent in their academics and take the time to enjoy being a college student. Senior art major, Alison Tinsley of Hartland, Mi, is a true testament of a student-athlete. Tinsley will be graduating in Dec. with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Tinsley is a former 2-time national champion as a member of MSU All-girl squad. After participating in clinics during high school, Tinsley was recruited by the University. “MSU cheer program has opened many doors,” said Tinsley. Her profound statement has allowed Tinsley to travel the world and build a vast network of friends and coworkers.
Through the MSU cheer program Tinsley has had the opportunity to travel to Finland and Puerto Rico to work camps. Traveling abroad to do something she loved inspired Tinsley to participate in a study abroad program.
This past summer Tinsley spent two and a half months in Barcelona, Spain participating in a graphic design internship. “I was pulled out of my comfort zone but this was the best way to learn the language,” said Tinsley. She was forced to use Spanish in her daily travels while riding the Metro. The program provided professional work experience in a Spanish culture that Tinsley desired.
Tinsley had previously taken one Spanish class at MSU before studying aboard. She stresses that foreign language classes are a great foundation to learn the language but being in country enhances your learning.
Down time on the weekends allowed Tinsley to visit the coast of Spain and travel around Europe. She spent time in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, taking in the beautiful scenery and historic sites.
After graduation, Tinsley plans to continue traveling the world. She would like to coach cheerleading at a university level in the future. Working in a professional setting has also inspired Tinsley to one-day start a business card service.
After achieving success by becoming a collegiate national champion, and living the dream in a large city, Tinsley remains humble. A hard working attitude has produced success in accomplishing her goals.
Tinsley states that the education she has received and the experience of being an MSU cheerleader has paved a way for her next chapter. “I will continue to purse new dreams and look forward to the future.”
