IHSA Regionals 

MSU 3-2-13 

What a successful weekend at our IHSA Regional Horse Show. Working a full season to qualify, it was very nice to see Morehead students do well. Placing 3rd in a big class of Intermediate Western was Junior Madelyn Palazzo (Louisville, KY). Placing 2nd in the same class and moving on to Semi Finals was Sophomore  Danae Philippus (Holland, MI). Placing 2nd in Novice Western and moving on to Semi Finals was Senior Christine Kawalek (Lakeville, MN). Winning Open Reining and moving on to Semi Finals was Senior and Captain Brittany Crabtree (Carlisle, KY). And winning her Hunt Seat class Walk/Trot/Canter and qualifying for Zones  was Freshman Meghan Crawford (Reynoldsburg, OH). With a good group of strong riders moving on to the next level, the team looks forward to the upcoming competitions with high hopes. 

February 23 and 24th 

The team had very busy weekend traveling to Lakeside Arena in Frankfort, KY. The Saddle Seat team did very well participating in an Academy show. Freshman Meagan Darby (Versailles, KY) placed 2nd in Open Workout and 3rd in Open Horsemanship. Junior Emily Garn (Syracuse, NY) placed 3rd in Adult Walk/Trot Workout. Junior Madelyn Palazzo (Louisville, KY) placed 3rd in Open Pleasure and took the class with a 1st place in Walk/Trot/Canter bareback. Finishing up the Saddle Seat show, Captain and Senior Sarah Lynch (Pittsburgh, PA) placed 2nd in Open Pleasure and won 1st place in Open Equitation. The Saddle Seat team had a wonderful time showing in the Academy. 

Continuing the weekend, The Western Team finished off the regular season with an IHSA show on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Jessica Sellers (Knoxville, TN) started off on a good note, placing 2nd in the Intermediate II division. Junior Kathi Crites (Moorefield, WV) followed getting 3rd in Intermediate II. Senior Christine Kawalek (Lakeville, MN) did well placing 2nd in Advanced. Captain and Senior Brittany Crabtree (Carlisle, KY) had a wonderful ride placing 3rd in Open Reining. The Western Team is very proud to finish off the year as Reserve High Point Team in the Region. With 5 western team members qualifying for regions, we look forward to next weekend with excitement and high hopes.

The Hunt Seat Team worked hard in a double header with IHSA shows both Saturday and Sunday. Freshman Katlin Brown (Cincinnati, OH) started off the weekend setting the bar high placing 3rd in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter. Freshman Madison Paver (Maysville, KY) followed in line placing 3rd in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter. Freshman Madyson Hutchinson (Summerset, KY) keeps improving as she placed 2nd in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter. Freshman Meghan Crawford (Reynoldsburg, OH) was very happy to win the class, placing 1st in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter and qualifying for regionals next weekend. Freshman Georgia Keogh (Versailles, KY) competed in Novice placing 3rd on the flat and 2nd in fences. Freshman Amy Tornquist (East Greenwich, RI) also showed in Novice placing 2nd in both flat and fences. Captain and Senior Kristen Boylen (Elizabethtown, KY) was very happy to finish her last IHSA show placing 3rd in Open Flat. After her class, her Hunt Seat team surprised her with flowers to show their appreciation for a wonderful year.

ISSRA Saddle Seat Show at NKU 

On February 17^th, the MSU Saddle Seat Team, along with three MSU horses, traveled to NKU for the second ISSRA show of the semester. Overall, horses and team members performed beautifully in both rail and pattern classes ranging from Beginner Walk Trot to Open. In the Advanced division, both Senior captain Sarah Lynch (Pittsburgh, PA) and Sophomore Madelyn Palazzo (Louisville, KY) earned a third place in their respective rail classes. Lynch also went on to earn a first place in the Advanced Pattern class. Freshman Meagan Darby (Versailles, KY) also caught the eye of the judge and came out with a first place in the Novice Rail class. To round out the day, Junior Emily Garn (Syracuse, NY) finished a competitive Beginner Walk Trot Rail class with a second place ribbon. Overall, the small team made a big showing and spirits were high as the show came to a close. 

IHSA Western Shows at Midway 

February 10th, 2013 

The Western Team was busy on Sunday with 2 shows at Midway College. We also brought some horsesthat were on their best behavior and did very well. The team members also showed very well, including Cody Tingle, a freshman from Stanton KY, who placed 2nd in Walk/Jog, Taylor Davidson, a freshman from Winchester, KY, who placed 3rd in Intermediate II, Madelyn Palazzo, a junior from Louisville, KY, who placed 1st and 2nd in Intermediate II, Danae Philippus, a sophomore from Holland, MI, who placed 1st and 1st in Novice. With only one show left, we are looking forward to finishing the year strong!

ISSRA Saddle Seat Show at U of L 

February 9th, 2013 

On Saturday, February 9th the MSU Saddle Seat team traveled to Zubrod Stables in Prospect, KY for the first ISSRA show of the semester. The team made a strong showing on all unfamiliar horses, with yellow ribbons being the trend of the day. Senior Captain Sarah Lynch (Pittsburgh, PA) started off the day with a third in the Advanced Rail class, and finished with another third in the Advanced Pattern. Sophomore Madelyn Palazzo (Louisville, KY) continued the streak with two thirds in the second split of the Advanced Rail and Advanced Pattern classes, respectively. Freshman Meagan Darby ( ) then reined in two more third places in the Novice Rail and Novice Pattern classes. Finally breaking the streak, Junior Emily Garn (Syracuse, NY) earned an exciting first place win in her very first Walk Trot Pattern class! That along with a fourth in the Walk Trot Rail class put her in a tie for Junior High Point Rider, and after a ride-off Garn was awarded the title of Reserve Junior High Point Rider for the show. (Oh and Happy 21st Birthday Emily!) Overall, spirits were high as the team climbed back into the van and headed for Morehead. 

IHSA Hunt Seat and Western at Midway College 

February 2 and 3, 2013 

What a big weekend to start the Spring Semester off. With frigid temperatures and a fair amount of snow, the team kept warm with high spirits and good company. The Hunt Seat started off both mornings with jumping and flat, followed by the Western team competing in reining and rail work to finish off each day. We would like to congratulate both teams for a job well done, with a special recognition for the Hunt Seat Riders Katlin Brown, a freshman from Cincinnati, OH, who placed 1st in Beginning Walk/Trot/Canter, Madyson Hutchinson, a freshman from Nancy, KY, who placed 1st in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Madisen Paver, a freshman from Maysville, KY, who placed 1st and 2nd in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Meghan Crawford, a freshman from Reynoldsburg, OH, who placed 1st and 1st in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Jessica Sellers, a freshman from Knoxville, TN, who placed 2nd in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Georgia Keogh, a freshman from Versailles, KY, who placed 3rd in Novice Fences, and Amy Tornquist, a freshman from East Greenwich, RI, who placed 2nd in Novice Fences and 2nd and 3rd in Novice Flat. Congrats for a successful show to the Western Riders, including Jessica Sellers, a freshman from Knoxville, TN, who placed 3rd in Intermediate II, Madelyn Palazzo, a junior from Louisville, KY, who placed 3rd in Intermediate II, Kathi Crites, a junior from Moorefield, WV, who placed 2nd in Intermediate II, Hannah Martin , a junior from Lawrenceburg, KY, who placed 1st in Intermediate II, Danae Philippus, a sophomore from Holland, MI, who placed 1st and 2nd in Novice, Christine Kawalek, a senior from Lakeville, MN, who placed 1st and 3rd in Advanced, and Captain Brittany Crabtree, a senior from Carlisle, KY who placed 1st and 3rd in Reining and Won High Point Rider for Saturday's show. We are proud to say that the Western Team placed 2nd overall for Saturdays show winning the title of Reserve High Point Team! The western team will have a busy week of practice while looking forward to another great show at Midway next weekend.

MSU Hunt Seat and Western, November 17th and 18th, 2012 

The MSU Equestrian Team had a busy weekend with 2 Hunt seat shows in the mornings and 2 western shows in the afternoons. We are very thankful to all of our horses and to the other schools in the region for all of their assistance in making the weekend so successful. ISSRA Saddle Seat at KHP 11-11-12 

This past weekend the MSU Saddle Seat team travelled to the KY Horse Park to compete against competitors from 6 schools in the second intercollegiate competition of the semester. Senior captain Sarah Lynch (Pittsburgh, PA) earned a first place in the Advanced Pattern class, and Freshman Meagan Darby (Versailles, KY) followed close behind with a win in the Novice Pattern class. Meagan also earned a second in her Novice Rail class. Other notable rides included Sophomore Madelyn Palazzo (Louisville, KY) with a third in the Advanced Pattern class and Freshman Katie Roberts (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) with a third in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter rail class.

IHSA Hunt Seat at UofL 10-28-12  

The MSU Hunt Seat Team traveled to U of L for their first competition of the season. The weather was not ideal but the team and the horses pulled through and still had two great shows. Special recognition goes  to Lauren Peddicord, a sophomore from Columbus, OH, who placed 2nd and 3rd in Walk/Trot, Madyson Hutchinson, a freshman from Somerset, KY, who placed 1st in Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter, Jessica Sellers, a freshman from Knoxville, TN, who placed 1st and 2nd in Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter, Caitlin Slack, a sophomore from Ashtabula, OH, who placed 2nd and 2nd in Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter, Meghan Crawford, a freshman from Reynoldsburg, OH, who placed 3rd and 3rd in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Georgia Keogh, a freshman from Versailles, KY, who placed 2nd in Novice Over Fences, and Amy Tornquist, a freshman from East Greenwich, RI, who placed 2nd and 3rd in Novice Flat. ISSRA Saddle Seat at MSU 10-13-12 

On October 13th, the Morehead State Equestrian Team hosted the very first ISSRA Saddle Seat Show of the season. We had a great turn out with the other ISSRA teams. All the horses did excellent and were very well behaved. We would like to high light our team members that did especially well, Emily Garn, a Junior from Clay, NY, who placed 3rd in Walk/Trot Saddle Seat Equitation, Paige Denniston, a freshman from Campton, KY, who placed 3rd in Walk/Trot/Canter Saddle Seat Equitation, Madelyn Palazzo, a sophomore from Louisville, KY, who placed 2nd in Advanced Saddle Seat Equitation, and Sarah Lynch, a Senior from Pittsburg, PA, who placed 1st in  Advanced Saddle Seat Equitation, 1st in Advanced Pattern, and also received High Point Rider of the show. We look forward to more great results from the upcoming Saddle Seat Shows.

We are so proud of all of our team members. A special congratulations goes to Miranda Hall, a sophomore from Hazard, KY who placed 1st in Walk/Jog; Margaret McCauley, a sophomore from Cynthiana, KY who placed 2nd in Walk/Jog; Hannah Martin, a junior from Lawrenceburg, KY, who placed 3rd in Intermediate I; Anna Hall, a freshman from Cynthiana, KY, who placed 2nd in Intermediate II; Madelyn Palazzo, a sophomore from Louisville, KY, who placed 3rd in Intermediate II; Christine Kawalek, a senior from Lakeville, MN, who placed 3rd in Novice; and Brittany Crabtree, a senior from Carlisle, KY, who placed 1st and 1st in Open Reining and tied for Reserve High Point Rider in both shows.

With such a great start, we are looking forward to a great season!
