The day served as a “think-tank” with presentations and roundtable discussions for education leadership in postsecondary, adult education, high school and middle school on promising practices driving college and career readiness.

Communicating College Readiness Standards:

Dr. Jane Jensen of the University of Kentucky will lead a conversation examining what the new assessment language means to both P12 and postsecondary practitioners and instructors. Dr. Jensen will share a perspective on how we might bridge communication across P-20 in order to identify postsecondary institutional responsibilities as they relate to SB1 (2009)/Unbridled Learning legislation. Participants will then collaborate to develop their ideas and questions related to communicating college readiness standards to multiple audiences. Topics may include summer transition programs, general education courses, advising, and faculty development.

Transition from P12 and ABE programs to Postsecondary and Career:

Dr. Dan Connell, MSU's Assistant Vice President of Adult Education and College Access will share his expertise and experience as it relates to students transitioning from P12 and Adult Basic Education programs to postsecondary and career. Following the presentation, participants will have an opportunity to discuss barriers, solutions and next steps. Topics may include barriers facing adults, promising solutions to these barriers, strategies to enhance adult education instruction, partnerships, and using assessment data to increase college success for adults.

Continuous Assessment and School Improvement:

One Story of Results: Learn how Campbell County Schools began the journey of continuous improvement six years ago. With inarguable results demonstrated on formative, state, and national assessments, Dr. Shelli Wilson will share what has worked to place Campbell County Schools in a continuous improvement mindset. Learn how CCS embraces goal setting, collaborative learning walks, transition, acceleration practices and Professional Learning Communities. Learn how hope, engagement, and well-being support removes barriers, and how a 21st Century Learning focus will continue to bring every child success in Campbell County Schools.

Postsecondary Education Tools and Collegiate Learning Assessments:

Student Success in Higher Education: Using Professional Learning Communities to impact student learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment- What began at EKU as a project to align selected Teacher Education and General Education syllabi to the Common Core standards has become a faculty development initiative through which faculty analyze the relationship between teaching and learning. Using PLCs as a vehicle to promote reflection, faculty members have explored the connection between outcomes, instruction, and assessment. Dr. Dorie Combs and Dr. Ginni Fair will share their insights from this work, exploring appropriate "next steps" to meet the challenges of the higher education mandates within Unbridled Leaning (SB1) and lead discussion among the participants to set goals for next steps.
