ENGLISH EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Area of Concentration in English Leading to Certification in grades 8-12 at Morehead State University is based on standards established by the National Council of Teachers of English and approved by the Kentucky Education and Professional Standards Board as well as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. In Kentucky, certification in English also includes certification for teaching speech, theater, and journalism.
Morehead State University English Education students receive broad and in-depth preparation in literature, linguistics, and writing and participate in hands-on methods classes that provide real classroom experience for pre-service teachers.
Students can expect:
*Current research-based theories and practices in various areas of English pedagogy;
*Standards-based curriculum design for language arts classes, including planning and modeling lessons and units aligned with NCTE/IRA standards, KDE New Teacher Standards, Program of Studies and Core Content;
*Inquiry-based, student-centered, and collaborative instruction;
*Integrating assessment with instruction (evaluation instruments in English, e.g. rubrics, analytical scoring, and portfolios) and currency with KDE portfolio and CATS assessment processes;
*Understanding of and respect for diversity in language across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social and gender roles;
*Reflective teaching to serve diverse individual learning styles and needs;
*A program that prepares teachers "who are able to perform in authentic teaching situations, using academic content and processes that are necessary to promote effective teaching and learning" (MSU Conceptual Framework for Professional Education).
