The goal of linguistics is (1) to contribute to students' liberal education by allowing them to investigate the nature, acquisition, and function of human language, especially its history, structure, and role in society; and (2) to prepare them for careers in which language is of central importance, including careers in education, law, communications, foreign language, translation, journalism, technical writing, psychology, anthropology, and speech pathology.
