Creative Writing
The goal of the creative writing program at Morehead State University is to combine the rigorous instruction of creative writing with an active creative writing community so that aspiring writers may develop their individual talents in an atmosphere that is both demanding and supportive.
At MSU students may pursue a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in creative writing, with courses from the introductory to the advanced level in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Students will complete a creative writing thesis in their senior years. Students must apply for admission into this selective program (contact a creative writing faculty member about the application process). A minor in creative writing is also available. Graduate students in the MA program may opt for completing a creative thesis as part of their program requirements. The creative writing faculty includes Associate Professor of English George Eklund (poetry), Associate Professor of English Chris Holbrook (fiction), Writer in Residence Crystal Wilkinson (fiction/poetry) and Instructor of English Rebecca Howell (poetry). Course work may be supplemented by a number of extracurricular opportunities. Students may submit work for publication in Inscape, the MSU literary journal, and may serve on the editorial board. The MSU Reading Series gives students the opportunity to meet and interact with published authors who are invited to campus to give public readings of their work. A brief list of past visiting authors includes Silas House, Robert Morgan, Sena Jeter Naslund, Gurney Norman, Ed McClanahan, Gerald Stern, Nikki Finney, Jessica Care More, Frank X. Walker and A.J. Verdelle. Through such venues as the MSU Coffeehouse, the MSU Writer’s Network, and the Inscape Showcase, students have the opportunity to participate in public readings. MSU further supports creative writing through such efforts as the Thomas and Lillie D. Chaffin Award for Appalachian Literature and the New Writers Series. More information about the creative writing program may be found via the links on the navigation bar on the left or by contacting a creative writing faculty member.
