FEDERAL WORK-STUDY:  Off-Campus Employment

A student may be employed off campus under the Federal Work-Study Program by a federal, state, or local public agency, or by a private nonprofit organization.  The work must be preformed "in the public interest" - that is, for the national or community welfare, rather than for a particular interest or group.

Local public agencies include city or county governmental office, public schools, community-owned hospitals, public libraries, and community centers.  Organizations recognized as nonprofit under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code qualify for Work-Study eligibility.

What are the criteria for employer participation in the Federal Work-Study Program?
Community service agencies must comply with the federal regulations of the U.S. Department of Education and with college policies.  Community service agencies give students work experience which in turn assist community agencies address needs in the following Carnegie Foundation service categories:

*At-risk youth
*Community and economic development
*Culture/arts/performance
*Disaster/emergency prevention and mitigation
*Disaster/emergency response and recovery 
*Education/dropout prevention/employment
*English as a second language 
*Environment
*Health/nutrition 
*Homelessness
*Housing 
*Hunger
*Mentoring   
*Senior citizen services
*Special needs support for the disabled
*Tutoring
*Youth development

How are community agencies identified?

Community service agencies submit job descriptions (see Job Description example on this site) and requests for students to the Office of Career Services through the Job Links page located at https://morehead-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?cck=1&au=&ck=.  Each agency's request is reviewed and, if the agency meets Program eligibility criteria, a Federal Work-Study Community Service Program Agreement (see sample) is forwarded for signature.  The agency will be asked to guarantee a maximum ten (10) hours per week, while class is in session, for each job/position. 

Where are jobs listed?

All job descriptions will be on-line in the Office of Career Services Job Links site at  https://morehead-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?cck=1&au=&ck=.  This information will also be available through the Center for Regional Engagement, 320 University Street, Morehead, KY   40351.  All payroll wll be handled through the Center for Regional Engagement.  Qualified Federal Work Study applicants will be referred to community service agencies for interviews.  Morehead State University cannot guarantee applicants for all posted positions.

What are the criteria for student participation in the community service program?
To be eligible for the Federal Work-Study/Community Service Program a student must:
*be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and,
*be enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree program at Morehead State University and regularly attend classes and,
*be in good academic standing as defined by the Financial Aid Office and,
*meet financial aid eligiblity criteria for a Federal Work-Study Award*

*NOTE:  The amount of federal work-study funds awarded to the student depends on how much the student needs to support her/his education.  Student need is determined by the Morehead State University Financial Aid Office.

How are students recruited and hired?

Interested federal work-study students are referred to eligible community service agencies for interviews.  Students must meet the employer's requirements, qualifications, and expectations for the job.  Once a candidate is selected, the agency notifies the Center for Regional Engagement (CRE) and the student then works with the CRE to complete the required paperwork.
