Verification
Every year the U.S. Department of Education selects a percentage of financial aid applicants for a review of their financial aid information. This process of review is know as verification.
If the student's application is selected for review, they may be requested to submit certain information regarding:
- Adjusted Gross Income ( a copy of the federal tax return will be requested)
- Federal Income Tax Paid
- Household Size
- Number in College
- Sources and Amounts of Untaxed Income
The student will be contacted by the MSU Office of Enrollment Services requesting the necessary documents. This information is compared to the information orginially submitted on the student's FAFSA . If there is a discrepancy, corrections will be made through the Federal Pell Grant Processor.
The student cannot receive any federal financial aid funds until the verification process has been completed.
Verification Policy and Procedures
All applicants selected for verification through the computer edits used by the U.S. Department of Education's central processor are verified by this institution regardless of any limit reached. In addition to applicants selected by the system, this institution will verify any non-selected applicant, when the institution becomes aware of conflicting information.
- Exclusions From Verification
This institution applies all permissible exclusions when appropriate with the exception of two, (1) 30% limitation established by the Higher Education Technical Amendments Act of 1987 and (2) 90 day exclusion in verifying household size and number in college. Verification of these data elements is mandatory even though the output document is received by the institution less than 90 days after the applicant signed the application.
No exclusion will be applied (unless an applicant dies during the award year), when the institution has conflicting data or has reason to believe that the information is incorrect.
- Optional Interim Disbursements
This institution does not utilize the option for interim disbursements of Federal Pell Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, CAP Grant, Federal SEOG. Federal Direct Loan certification also takes place after the selected applicant has completed the verification process. Verification is considered complete when the applicant has submitted all requested documents and the accuracy of the information has been established. If necessary, a new EFC will be calculated, and when appropriate, the award will be adjusted. At this point, disbursement may be made for CAP Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, FSEOG, and Federal Direct Loans. A Federal Pell Grant is not disbursed until all necessary corrections have been submitted to the Department of Education's Central Processor and the corrected information has been received by the institution.
- Federal Student Employment - Interim Disbursements
This institution will allow a selected applicant to work on a Federal Student Employment job for up to sixty (60) days after enrollment prior to completion of verification, unless this institution has conflicting documentation. At this time, FSE students who have not completed verification will have their employment terminated. Reinstatement of FSE may be allowed if the applicant subsequently completes verification in a timely fashion and before the final deadline.
- Deadlines
The final deadline for completion of verification is ninety (90) days after verification documents have first been requested by the institution. If the applicant has not submitted complete documentation at this time, the verification will be terminated and no further requests will be made by the institution. The applicant will be notified of such termination. If the ninety (90) days has expired prior to the first day of enrollment however, termination will not occur until thirty (30) days after enrollment.
The institution will review (after termination) any appeal by the selected applicant based on extenuating circumstances and if said appeal is approved, reinstate the verification process. A final termination date will be established, based on the circumstances warranting the appeal.
- Award Changes
Upon completion of verification, the institution will notify the selected applicant of any award changes through (1) an amended award letter and (2) a corrected Student Aid Report Acknowledgement which has been reprocessed through the Department of Education's Central Processor. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Office of Enrollment Services for explanation of corrections and amended awards.
- Corrections
The institution will correct inaccurate data and calculate a new EFC (Expected Family Contribution) through the Federal Methodology formula. If corrections are necessary, they will be made electronically through Morehead State University's Office of Enrollment Services and the Department of Education's Central Processor. The corrected Student Aid Acknowledgement will then be sent to the student by the central processor in order to notify them of any change.
- Communication
When the institution becomes aware that an applicant has been selected for verification, requests for documents are made. Within two to four weeks, a follow-up request is made if the applicant has not responded or submitted documents. A third and final request will be made two to four weeks after the follow-up request.
Letters requesting information will contain a clear explanation of the documents needed to satisfy the verification requirements. The applicant's responsibilities in regard to the completion of verification, will be clearly stated in the request letter.
