POSITION DESCRIPTION OF PEER ADVISOR 2008-2009

The Peer Advisor is a key figure in a new student's experience at Morehead State University.  Peer Advisors can and will make significant contributions to the lives of students.

Role Of Peer Advisor

Peer Advisors play an active role in MSU 101 and New Student Days. Peer Advisors must be enthusiastic and have a desire to work with first year students.

Peer Advisors assist with New Student Days in August. Peer Advisors assist students in getting acclimated to Morehead State University and with orientation staff in providing a quality orientation program.

Peer Advisors assist MSU 101 instructors with teaching the course. Peer Advisors often conduct in-class activities, and assist in scheduling guest speakers and activities. Peer Advisors conduct two outside individual meetings with each student.

The role of the peer advisor is to provide guidance and support rather than counseling. The peer advisor does not take the place of the professional or faculty advisor or other professional support staff. The academic advisor must sign all schedules; drop/add requests or declaration of major forms.

Qualifications

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:

1. Exhibit knowledge of first year student issues.
2. Exhibit leadership abilities.
3. Exhibit a commitment to Morehead State University and the mission of MSU 101 and New Student Orientation.
4. Adhere to a strong code of ethics.
5. Exhibit strong communication skills.
6. Be able to work with a diverse group of people including students, parents, faculty, and staff.
7. Be in good social standing with MSU.
8. Complete 30 credit hours by August 2007.
9. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher by the end of the Spring 2007 semester.

Terms and Conditions of Employment(dates are tentative and subject to change)

Length of Position: The position begins with mandatory training on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 and ends when the class ends  week of November 5, 200.

Mandatory Events:

1. Peer Advisor Training - August 15 - 17, 2007
2. New Student Days - August 18-20 (optional hours)
3. All MSU 101 class meetings
4. Two outside of class meetings with each student.
5. One individual meeting with the First Year Program Director

Compensation: Peer Advisors are paid $5.15 per hour (or minimum wage). Peer Advisors are paid for time spent in training, New Student Orientation, MSU 101 classes, individual student meetings, and preparation time with instructor. Peer Advisors are paid bi-monthly according to the university pay schedule. Students that have a work-study in another department must contact the First Year Program Director for approval.

Position Responsibilities

  • With the instructor's guidance, participate in the MSU 101 class. This participation may include facilitating small groups, assisting with group activities, making brief presentations with instructor's supervision, and assisting with class preparation. Peer Advisors must attend each MSU 101 class meeting.
  • Schedule and conduct, in person, interviews with assigned students.
  • Provide guidance and support services rather than counseling.
  • Provide a positive student role model for other students to emulate.
  • Assist new students in becoming more knowledgeable of academic policies and procedures, support services, university resources, campus organizations, and university activities.
  • Refer students to proper MSU faculty or staff when necessary.
  • Keep accurate and current records of student contacts.
  • Collect information and prepare reports for evaluation of program.
  • Meet with assigned faculty/staff member for training, guidance, and monitoring.  Be available during advance registration and registration to assist students.
  • Remain knowledgeable of academic policies, degree requirements, and services. 
  • Attend the training sessions offered to peer advisors.
  • Meet with the First Year Program Director during the semester, as needed.
