Bio

Gordon Towell received his bachelors degree in music education from the University of Alberta, masters degree in jazz studies from Indiana University, and doctoral degree in music education with a cognate in jazz studies from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He has held teaching positions at the University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, Keyano College, Grant McEwan College, Queen Elizabeth High School, McNally Composite High School and Clover Bar Junior High School.

Dr. Towell is presently professor of music in jazz studies and music education at Morehead State University. In this position he directs two jazz bands, jazz combos, teaches jazz history and improvisation, and also assists in the preparation of student teachers. Gordon is a frequent adjudicator and guest soloist/conductor across Canada and the United States.

As a saxophonist, he has performed with The Manhattan Transfer, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Aaron Neville, Peabo Bryson, Roberta Flack, Melissa Manchester, The Lexington Philharmonic, The Indianapolis Symphony, The Edmonton Symphony, The Richmond Symphony, The Huntington Symphony, and many others. He can be heard performing regularly with the MSU Faculty Jazz Quintet, the DOJO Jazz Orchestra, and the Jay Flippin/Gordon Towell Jazz Duo. He has four CDs released on Ballpark Records: Ask Me Now, Blue Duck Suit, Still Friends and Sketch Pad. Towell was the recipient of the 2001 Morehead State University Distinguished Creative Productions Award.
