Listed below is a degree map for full-time students pursuing a Master’s degree in English. Students should consult this template and the department’s course rotation when constructing their individual schedules. Where appropriate, the map differentiates between students who complete extra coursework in English or a related field and students who choose the thesis option.
Year One:
FALL SEMESTER
- ENG 603: Bibliography (this required course is ideally taken at the start of the program)
- British literature course (select from ENG 632, 634, 635, 638, 645, 647, 648, 650, 652)
- Literature elective (any literature course)
SPRING SEMESTER
- Linguistics course (select from ENG 601, 604, 680, 685, 697)
- American literature course (select from ENG 619, 620, 622, 624, 663)
- Literature elective (any literature course)
(Students planning to write a thesis should formulate a thesis committee by the end of the term)
Year Two:
FALL SEMESTER
- Writing course (select from ENG 608, 609, 612, 683, 684, 690)
- English elective (any course with an ENG prefix)
- English elective (and course with an ENG prefix)
(Students planning to write a thesis should submit a thesis prospectus at the beginning of the semester)
SPRING SEMESTER
Students taking extra coursework:
- 6 hours of graduate coursework in English (any ENG course) or a related field (such as Education or Communications)
Students writing a thesis:
- 6 hours of ENG 699: Thesis
All students:
- Completion of the M.A. exit exam in either April or July
